Hello, thank you for paying my page a visit.
My name is Sol Nie. I am a third-year undergraduate student at San Diego State University studying Psychology with an emphasis in Neuroscience, in addition to a minor in Counseling and Social Change. I was appointed to the MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) program in September of 2026. Feel free to click around!
Interests
My research interests are in the broadest sense, primarily concerned with studying health disparities in marginalized communities. To be more specific, I am interested in studying psychopathological disorders within sexual and racial minorities. And within psychopathological disorders, I am most focused on neurodevelopmental and eating disorders. Much of the literature on these conditions do not account for the experiences of non WEIRD (White, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) countries, which is especially problematic when it concerns conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder which are defined by an inability to follow social norms within the individual's culture.
While these goals may sound terribly vague, I am early in my research career, and therefore cannot confidently state my research interests until I have found work within a lab.

Right now, my future goal is to pursue a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, and down the line become a clinical neuropsychologist that primarily investigates mental disorders within marginalized minorities.
I do have a variety of interests and hobbies that I partake in my free time. I am an avid reader and writer who finds much joy in engaging with the art and media that other people create. I am always pursuing knowledge of miscellaneous topics unrelated to my major. I believe that a good scientist is inquisitive about the world as a whole, not just what lies within their lab. Currently, these topics include prion dieases and marine neurobiology (specifically that of comb jellies).

Bio
English is not my first language. I grew up as the eldest child of two first-generation Chinese immigrants. The dominant language in our household was not English, but Mandarin. As a result, my childhood self was woefully ill-adapted when he started to navigate the American education system. Neither of my parents spoke to me in English, so I had to learn the entire language by myself via a voracious consumption of English literature on everything ranging from philosophy to mathematical research papers.
I was most curious about people and their brains. Humans are such wonderfully social creatures, and I was one, so why couldn’t I socialize like everyone else did? Years later, I was diagnosed with Attentive Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Although as a child, I didn’t have the vocabulary to realize that I was LGBTIA+ nor did I realize I was neurodivergent, I still remained astutely aware that I stood out. There are many factors that led to me pursuing a degree in psychology, such as my wonderful high school teacher who nourished my interest in the human mind. But fundamentally, it all began with a confused child’s determination to understand the difference between him and his peers.
Although I am a scientific researcher, I very much hold a soft spot for the humanities. I believe the best progress is made when we blend the two disciplines together instead of treating them as fundamentally incompatible.
